How to Find Where People Lived

19th and 20th century ancestors

To find the county of residence, look at:

  • Any publication that has records for the entire state or an entire region of the state.
  • Book and electronic indices for the censuses.

17th and 18th century ancestors

To find the county of residence, look at:

  • Various card indices at the Maryland State Archives.
  • Any publication, such as The Calendar of Maryland State Papers that contains records for the entire state or province.
  • Card files of the Oaths of Fidelity MSA S1420 at the Maryland State Archives or the Maryland Historical Society.
  • Early censuses taken in eighteenth century Maryland: the Census of 1776 and the Census of 1778
  • The 1783 Assessment List MSA S1437 for the State of Maryland is on line at the Archives.
