The National Archives indexes the Service Records in several separate series:
- Records for the period between the Revolution and the War of 1812. These give soldier's name, rank, military organization, dates mustered in and out, and (where known), the state from which he served. These records may help you to trace the migration of the family.
- Records of the War of 1812 contain the same information.
- Records of the Indian and related wars, 1817-1857, contain the same information, but the state of service is not always known.
- Records of the Mexican War seem to contain all of the above information, and in addition may give the age of the soldier.
- Miscellaneous Military Records, 1784-1815: contain little data.
- Naval service records include several series of records: (1) Records relating to Non-Commissioned Officers. and (2) Registers of Admission of Midshipmen or cadets
- Marine Corps Service Records.
Veterans' Benefits for Wars after the Revolution are found in four series of pension records at the National Archives:
- The Old War Series relates to death and disability claims for the entire period starting in 1790 up to the Civil War (excluding the War of 1812). It includes the Mexican War Death and Disability series, the Civil War Death and Disabilities (naval pensions only), and Miscellaneous Death and Disability. There is an index to the entire series on microfilm.
- The war of 1812 Series is based on services from 1812 to 1815.
- Pensions were granted under Acts of 1871 and 1878. Very few veterans or their widows lived so long.
- Mexican War Series, based on service between 1846 and 1848.
- The Indian War Series originally included pension claims for service 1832 - 1834, but was later extended to include service 1817 - 1898.
Militia Lists
In addition to the records of the Federal Government, both state and local governments may have generated records such as militia lists. In Maryland, many militia lists and pension applications for various counties have been published by F. Edward Wright of Family Line Publications (see bibliography for listing and locations).
